Terms of Reference

  1. To review all research proposal applications that involve the use of equipment/materials which present significant physical hazards, chemical hazards, or biological hazards; and to assess whether there are suitable facilities for the safe conduct of the proposed work, and the adequacy of the proposed control measures;
  2. To approve, require modifications, or reject research protocols in conformance with the HKUST Safety and Environmental Protection Manual and other safety standards of the University, including the guidelines and requirements from the Health, Safety and Environment Office;
  3. To review all amendments and project close reports relating to aforementioned approved projects;
  4. To work closely with the related office(s)/unit(s) in the University for monitoring research projects to ensure they are conducted in accordance with the approved protocols; and to take appropriate actions for projects deviating from the approved protocols;
  5. To examine and recommend any measures, policies and practices which may affect research safety;
  6. To deal with matters referred to it by the Committee on Research Practices; and to submit an annual report and other reports as required by the Committee.
