Mainland Engagement

The Greater Bay Area including Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Foshan commands a significant worldwide position in its research and industrial capabilities, generates potential for synergy and can be a leading force in the present age of innovation. To enhance the University’s national profile and presence, and to strategically expand its research activities and opportunities, HKUST has been proactively building impactful collaborations with leading Mainland institutions. HKUST’s Mainland platforms also serve as a vital force to advance innovation and knowledge transfer activities in the Greater Bay Area.

Guangzhou HKUST Fok Ying Tung Research Institute

Guangzhou HKUST Fok Ying Tung Research Institute (FYTRI), funded by Fok Ying Tung Foundation, was established in Nansha, Guangzhou in January 2007, which was the first and the only foreign research institute in Nansha. FYTRI has been one of the most important Mainland platforms of the University for knowledge transfer and advancement, engaging in innovative research, product and process development, training, entrepreneurship, and commercialization. FYTRI operates as a HKUST-centric open innovation platform and creates economic and social impact by connecting people, technologies, information, and resources in the Greater Bay Area and beyond.

HKUST Shenzhen Research Institute

HKUST Shenzhen Research Institute (SRI) plays a vital role in the University’s innovation and technology advancement efforts in Shenzhen. Based on outstanding talents, research infrastructure, and an entrepreneurship eco-system, especially the close relationship with industries, the IER Building develops into a prominent research, training, incubation base and local liaison platform in Shenzhen, pushing regional economic growth and technological advancement and fostering knowledge exchange between Hong Kong and Shenzhen.

HKUST LED-FPD Technology R&D Center at Foshan

HKUST LED-FPD Technology R&D Center at Foshan (FSC) is an institutional organization co-initiated by HKUST and Nanhai District Government of Foshan City. The lab facilities of FSC are certified by China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment (CNAS). Its main business consists of development and transfer of Light-Emitting Diode (LED) and Flat Panel Display (FPD) technologies for relevant industrial partners in Guangdong Province. FSC also provides technical services such as product characterization and testing, reliability assessment and failure analysis, product safety evaluation and technical staff training.

HKUST Shenzhen – Hong Kong Collaborative Innovation Research Institute (SHCIRI) is the University’s latest venture in Shenzhen. Situated in the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Cooperation Zone, SHCIRI serves as a unique and strategic platform for the University to leverage on the combined competitive advantages of Hong Kong and Shenzhen, and further enhances the overall position and capacities in the region and beyond. It is committed to fostering frontier research advancement, knowledge transfer and industry collaboration, as well as providing quality executive education.

Shenzhen-Hong Kong Innovation Research Institute for Brain Science

The Institute provides a platform to foster Hong Kong and Mainland collaboration in brain sciences and contribute to the public health and social and economic development in the Greater Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Bay Area. The Institute is a partnership between the region’s premier biomedical institutes, including HKUST, the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (SIAT), Southern University of Science and Technology, Shenzhen University, Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School, The University of Hong Kong, City University of Hong Kong and The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

HKUST and the South China University of Technology (SCUT) have collaborated to set up the SCUT - HKUST Joint Research Lab in 2012, to further explore potential innovative applications of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) materials in organic/polymer optoelectronic devices, organic lasers and biosensors. The partnership is synergistic as it leverages the strengths of both universities: HKUST's expertise in AIE materials and SCUT's state-of-the-art materials synthesis and device fabrication facilities.

University of Chinese Academy of Sciences 

In 2018, HKUST established a strategic partnership with the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) with the shared goal of jointly advancing research. Both prominent research and teaching institutions, the strategic partnership will help to advance research, talent development and knowledge transfer.
